Healthy Weight Gain during Pregnancy

You're pregnant and you are getting bigger as days go on! Believe it or not it's natural and you need to understand that weight gain during pregnancy helps your baby grow. The extra weight you gain during pregnancy furnishes nutrients for the developing baby in the womb.

If a woman does not gain weight throughout pregnancy, complications such as premature delivery or low birth weight infant could occur. Mothers not gaining more than 20 pounds during pregnancy deliver babies considered as small for gestational age (SGA), meaning they may have been malnourished during pregnancy.

However, gaining too much weight is also a "no-no" during pregnancy. There are potential problems with too much weight gain including: high blood pressure, cesarean birth, and long labor.

The goal is to keep the weight gain as steady as possible. If you are pregnant or considering pregnancy, make sure that you should have a good understanding of what to expect and what to do especially when it comes to weight. Always remember that healthy weight gain is mandatory during pregnancy. It is also one of the indicators that your child is growing properly and getting the nutrients that he/she needs.
